For some reason I just recently (within the past few years) became aware of the beautiful fact that it was music itself that brought my very own mother and father together! (I should have known, what with all of the natural musical aptitude seeping from all of their offspring). So, for your reading pleasure, the following is the tale of how music (music being used by God, that is) led James to Mary Pat.
My dad grew up in Accokeek, Maryland, while Mom was raised in Omaha, Nebraska. So, needless to say, the crossing of their paths had to be the work of God...Who just so happened to use music in their particular case. At 17 years old, Dad graduated from high school and was ready to take on the world! He played the trumpet quite nicely, so he decided to try out for the Airforce Band. They accepted him in a heartbeat (well, a heartbeat the length of his audition time). The Airforce gave him two options for where he would be stationed: Alaska...or NEBRASKA! (I know what you're thinking: "Hey,there's a song in there!" But it's too late. Naturally, I already wrote one!) Guess which state he chose?
Yes, Dad would be stationed at Offut Airforce Base in Bellevue, Nebraska (just a quick jaunt from Omaha) and play in the Airforce Band. So there's the first musically divine intervention. Here's the second: One day my mother sat in the front row at one of the band's performances. Their eyes met, the music stopped, it was as if there was no one else in the room. JUST KIDDING. Their romance wasn't THAT fanciful. Here's how it really happened. Mom and Dad, who were both Catholic at the time, attended the same church. But wait! They didn't just meet at a regular church meeting. It's more musical than that! Without knowing it, Mom and Dad were both participants in the music ministry at the church. Mom occasionally sang at mass with several other people, and Dad, of course, played his trumpet (and probably sang too, I'm not really sure).
I know you're on the edge of your seats, but I must insert a brief disclaimer that my mother insists I include here. Lest I misrepresent my mother to you by using creative license or omitting certain facts, she wants you to be sure to know that she actually has ZERO musical training (she's very humble). In fact, the only musical education of any kind that she remembers was one day in grade school, when she played the pitch pipe incorrectly when given a go at it, and was embarrassed in front of her whole class That said, she can carry a tune with the best of 'em!
Now, back to the love story! So Mom and Dad were both part of the music ministry at their church, but they still hadn't met. UNTIL...the church put on a "thank you" dinner for all music ministry participants! There it is again!: MUSIC trying to set these two up! Mom and Dad were two of only four young people who attended the dinner, so, naturally, they gravitated to each other. To make a pretty short story even shorter, they fell madly in love with each other, and were married within a year! The rest is history.
And THAT is why I can say that music had a role in my very existence! THAT is why I can say I was born of music! THAT is how music came to run through my veins!
